Just in time for Hallowe’en! Enjoy this informative presentation about frightening scams and frauds including familiar swindles like the “grandparent” con and many more. For adults. Please register.
We’ve all been there – had the email or phone call that seems “almost” legitimate: a problem with our Amazon account, a computer glitch that needs fixing or a “grandchild” in trouble. Worst of all is the horrible discovery that we are the victim of identity theft. Scams and frauds are everywhere.
Sometimes we recognize the scam, but often we don’t, and because we are genuinely concerned, afraid or just want to be helpful, we fall prey to these deceptions and lose both money and self-esteem. Sometimes we have no idea we have been swindled.
Since the world of scams and fraud is growing and changing, our only real defense is knowledge. We need to know who perpetuates these deceptions, who they are targeting, how to avoid being tricked, and what to do if it happens. Sarah Bowers-Peters and Elizabeth Kent can answer all these questions and more. They know all the scams including the very latest schemes making the rounds. They can help us avoid becoming victims, and if the worst has happened, they will make us feel better.
Sarah Bowers-Peter is the Program Director at Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington and Elizabeth Kent is the Executive Director of Victim Services Wellington. They have given many “Fraud Talks” throughout our region to enthusiastic audiences. This event is part of the Friends of the Guelph Public Library Open Minds Fall Speaker series.
