Join the Wellington County Branch of Ontario Genealogical Society and the Guelph Public Library to learn more about British Home Children. Please register.
This years marks the 150th anniversary of the first British Home Child arriving in Canada. Beginning in 1869, over 100,000 children were sent from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales to Canada as part of a child migration program. It is now estimated that 1 in 10 Canadians are descended from a British Home Child although many are not aware of this heritage.
Are you interested in learning more about British Home Children? Perhaps you recently learned that an ancestor was a British Home Child. Join us on September 14th from 1:30 to 4:30 to discuss:
· The historical factors that led to the development of this child migration program
· How children became involved in this program
· The major organizations involved in sending children to Canada and their related responsibilities
· What happened once the children arrived in Canada
· The available resources for researching ancestors who may have been British Home Children and the process for obtaining their records
This program will be held in the Boardroom at the Main Library.
